CUSTOM CUT LOG AND BRANCH STOCK AVAILABLE

Walnut Hollow Basswood Shapes

  Walnut Hollow Basswood Rounds

(I do not have basswood rounds, but above is a link where you can get them from Wallnut Hollow).

These original, country woodburning shapes have the mellow, fresh-cut beauty of fine wood. Use them for découpage, decorative painting, wood carving, and woodburning. Each shape has a finely sanded, blank surface and is specially treated to preserve the bark.

Available Sizes:

5-7" diameter - 1/2" thick

7-9" diameter - 5/8" thick

9"-11" diameter - 3/4" thick

(Discounts available for orders over 12 rounds)

NOTE:  If you need to order basswood rounds or planks for woodburning, you may want to check out my woodburning page for kits and burning tools.

WOOD VARIETIES I HAVE AVAILABLE

Birch Chunks

These are left-over chunks of birch logs from cutting the thin birch slices.  When they get about this short, they are a little too close to the saw blade to suite me, so I just keep the ends hoping somebody could use them.  I have lots of these.  They would make great candle holders, and especially for tea candles.  All different diameters and lengths. May not be cut straight at the ends, but I can cut them straight.    Click To Inquire About Birch Chunks

Thin Wood Slices

(up to 8" in diameter.  See below for larger slices)

Small branches and logs can be sliced at virtually any thickness and diameter.  If you need these slices sanded on both sides, the thinnest I can cut them is about 1/4".   Sanding will decrease thickness. If I go much thinner than that they end up looking like potato chips, and have a tendency to curl up when exposed to a fluctuation of humid and dry air, unless they are well sealed with varnish.   I recommend  a slice thickness of at least 1/2".

Some people have ordered slices at 3/16" thickness.  There will always be a slight variance in thicknesses even though I really strive to do the best job I can to give you what you want.   Click To Inquire About Wood Slices.

People use these slices for a variety of projects, such as Christmas ornaments, table numbering, wall applications, key chains, medallions, school and children's projects, fund raisers, and small woodburning projects.    I am building a  web page with customer photos which you might want to look at for ideas.  Check back occasionally for updates on that page. I only work on the website when it's raining, snowing, or I have only a little time between jobs to have some special coffee.

Don't forget, if you place an order and send me back a digital photo of your finished project, I will reimburse you $5 for letting me post it on the Customer Photo Page so other people can get ideas.  Also, if you are a business, have a website,  and order wood products from me, I will also provide a link to your website for free on the Customer Photo Page.  How better can life get????

If you need larger diameter slices, Send Me An Email.  I have logs and branches from 1" to 24". First come, first served.....

Balmagilead

Here is a picture of both large and small diameter Balmagilead logs and branches.  Note the thick brown bark.  The smaller diameter branches have a darker center.  The second photo is 4 - 5" slices, and the varnished slice is about 9" in diameter.   The larger slices make fantastic bases for lamps, gem trees, and other projects.  The wood does not split like other types of wood, and if treated, the bark generally stays on.

Half-Sawn Sticks and Branches

Any stick can be sawn in half length-wise.  These are generally used for picture frames, molding for cabinet doors and drawers, or other applications where you need a flat side of the branch.  The pictures here are #1 - Birch, #2 Peeled Pine, and #3 Poplar.

Speckled Alder

These trees grow only up to about 2" in diameter around here.  They can be used for small wood slices where a darker color wood is desired.  The bark looks similar to young birch, however it is usually covered with moss-like stuff that grows on the bark.  It seems to grow in more oblong shapes instead of round.

Poplar

Poplar is an easy wood to work with.  It is not to be used for unprotected outdoor projects.  The light color bark resembles birch, but is solid instead of paper-like.  The wood is very light in color, with the growth rings barely visible.  The wood is also very light weight.  I have all lengths and diameters available for slicing and half-cutting lengthwise.  The smaller poplar branches, if sliced thin, make perfect Christmas Tree decorations because of their pale color and light weight, and can be wood-burned, etched, carved, painted, or even lasered.

Maple Slices

Maple makes great medallions for small projects like key chains, name tags, wedding favors, ornaments, and other small diameter requirements.  I only have small diameter maple.  The bark on small maple slices is thin, and does not require any treatment to retain.

COMING SOON......natural edge pine molding

What a beautiful way to trim out a window or door.....or use it to make a picture or mirror frame.......

MOSAIC PIECES

These are small slices of twigs and branches cut to your desired diameter and thickness.  You can create some beautiful mosaics out of these pieces which can be applied to table tops & edges, picture frames, small boxes.   Long half-sawn or ripped twigs can be trimmed at any angle with a basic pruning shear.  All you need is an imagination. You can click on any of the following graphics to see a larger picture.

SLAB WOOD

Ideal for making log picture frames, log journals, and wall plaques, or wherever your imagination leads you.  I used slab wood and nailed it to dresser sides and drawers to make a log look dresser!   I used smaller slabs for molding around the windows in my living room.  For you truckers out there, make a "real" log book!   Specify length and thickness. Also, let us know what you're making and we will be sure to send you pieces that fit your project.  Slab wood is made from pine only.

BIRCH BARK & TUBES

I DO NOT HAVE FLAT SHEETS AVAILABLE NOW.

NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR CUSTOM ORDERSS

Due to the variations of projects when working with twigs, branches & logs, I feel that we can best satisfy our customers by providing custom orders.   It doesn't make sense to be cutting up all our stock for parts that nobody wants, so we will leave them whole until you tell us how you want them cut.

There is no extra charge for custom orders.

Looking for LARGE pine slices?

Check back soon.  They are being processed right now and will be for sale shortly.

Send an email To Sandy  if you are interested.  I will have extra large pine slices (20 - 25" in diameter) cut thick (5" or more) for projects like end tables, butcher block tables, chair seats, and heavy duty log projects.

INFORMATION ABOUT MY WOOD PRODUCTS

The wood species I have available are:

  • Pine

  • Poplar

  • Birch

  • Speckled Elder

  • Diamond Willow

  • Balmagilead

I do not have basswood.

Please click here to see basswood rounds.  These are made by Walnut Hollow, and are  available through Dick Blick and very affordable.  Their basswood slices are kiln dried, sanded, and won't crack and check like pine logs do.  There are other types of basswood shapes available.

Most log slices will split (check) eventually due to expansion and contraction from humidity and climate changes. (Nothing to do with Al Gore!) Sometimes you can incorporate the crack into your project.  Checking can be minimized if the slice is saturated with Pentacryl, or properly sealed, but there are no guarantees that checking can be prevented entirely.

Pine does not normally retain it's bark.  It chips off during the cutting process, and eventually separates from the wood as it ages. Pentacryl will help to retain the bark, but the log must be saturated when it is green (freshly cut).

Slices that are cut very thin, 1/4 - 1/2", also may lose their bark during the cutting process, depending upon what species of wood is being cut, and how dry it is.

Recommendations for large log slices is table tops, chairs, butcher blocks, head "stones", etc., where the log will be sliced fairly thick.  You should plan for checking to occur in your projects, and incorporate it into your rustic plan.

Keep in mind that large, thick slices of logs are very heavy and shipping charges may be high.

Any log or branch can be sliced either straight or at any angle you wish.  I generally try to saw orders according to angle cuts to minimize the time involved in resetting the saw and jig.

If you need a special burl, knot, crotch of a tree, please specify.

Logs and branches can be ripped lengthwise into flat boards of any thickness.  These slices can be used for signs, table tops, shelves.

Logs and branches can be cut in half, quartered, or cut into small strips lengthwise and can be used for picture frames, furniture borders, trim, and many other projects.

HOW TO APPLY BIRCH BARK TO CABINET DOORS:

  • Remove all the doors from the cabinets first.

  • The easiest way to attach bark to door fronts is to glue them down with any basic wood glue, like Elmer's.  Any type of wood glue will do.  Applying pressure will be the key to making sure the bark adheres well, and having a rough surface to apply it to.

  • If you are going to paint the cabinets, try not to paint the area where the bark will be.  If they are already painted, that area should be roughened up so that the glue has something rough to adhere to.  You can roughen that area with course sandpaper.

  • Cut the bark to the shape/size you need, and make sure the bark is very flat, not curved up at the edges. You can cut the bark with a heavy-duty pair of scissors, or a utility knife and straight edge.

  • Apply glue to the entire back of the bark and put in place onto the cabinet.  Try not to let the glue leak out on sides of the bark. You may want to put a few staples or small brad nails at the edges where you can't see them to ensure that the bark pieces stay in place until they are dry. Do not use tape over the bark to hold them in place, as it will lift-off some of the bark when you remove it.

  • Putting an old kitchen towel, or paper towels, over the bark will help to apply pressure to recessed areas of the bark, and it will also protect the bark from the pressure board, but be careful that no glue touches the towel or you won't get it off and you'll have a mess.

  • Next place a flat board, or use the back of another cabinet door, over the bark.  You can keep stacking the doors this way, and then weight down the very top door with a flat board and something very heavy so that all the doors are compressed at one time until the glue is dry.

  • For a clean edge, use some flat wood molding, small wood dowels sawn in half, or sticks that are cut in half to secure all of the edges of the bark down to the door front.  These will also hide the staples if you used any, and further secure the bark to the door.

  • Cut your molding.  You may need to pre-drill small holes to prevent cracking.

  • You may also want to coat or paint the molding now instead of after it is applied over the bark.

  • Put a little glue on the back of the molding you use.

  • Position the molding on the bark so that the edges of the bark are hidden.

  • Use small brad nails to attach the molding to the cabinet door.

  • Use a nail punch to pound in the heads of the brad nails to conceal them.   Fill holes with wood filler if necessary.

  • The molding will also help hold the bark in place and prevent it from peeling up at the edges in the future.   I think that this method works best, and leaves a cleaner, more professional finished look.

I use this technique on picture frames, and here's a picture of one of my frames with bark and twig molding

For the molding I sawed small twigs in half so that they attached to the bark and frame securely.
